At long last the first 9th Edition rumors are here. Take a look at the talk of what’s coming next in 40K.

For the last 6 months there has been murmurs of 40K’s next Edition. We’ have been hearing scuttlebutt for a while about a release in 2020, which would align 40K with the edition history of Age of Sigmar and its 2 year Soul Wars “edition soft update”. But details of any type were absent – until today. Here’s the first set of 9th Edition rumors to go public:

rumors from LordValrek on B&C

“next summer 9th edition, marines and Necrons.

I wouldn’t expect it to be like 8th edition. More like AOS 2.0 where all the books stay current with the exception of the main rule book which is fine tuned.
From a business point of view having a new edition next year seems like the only logical outcome in my opinion.”
He then goes on to say that this comes from a source that has previously provided correct rumors.

Thoughts

This talk of Marines and Necrons seems to describe a boxed set, probably the replacement for Dark Imperium. Age of Sigmar’s Soul Wars was a “soft edition update” that didn’t invalidate any existing Battletomes and tweaked and updated the core rules.  I would expect 40K to follow the same pattern. After the total reset of 8th edition, GW can’t do that again anytime soon. They also wont want to undo all the work of producing the two dozen and counting 8th codexes.  It makes a lot of sense for 9th to be a cleanup edition that incorporates the lessons learned from 8th, and the most popular ideas from Age of Sigmar. So an edition closer philosophically to 4th edition which was a cleanup edition after the total reboot of 3rd edition.
We’ll talk about exactly what those ideas may be later, but this all seems realistic. There are already some players who have been studying the subtle wording tweaks to rules in the Space Marine/Supplemental books who think they could be the first codexes written with 9th in mind.
~ Have at it, and what do you expect from a new 9th Edition?
