2019 was a pretty good year for wargaming. Here’s our picks for the best of the year!

It is time to take a look at the wargaming books that made an impact on us the most in the year of 2019. There have been a ton of releases but these were the ones that helped us reshape and redefine our gaming in 2019. Let’s dive in!

Codex: Space Marines (& It’s Supplements)

Is this one cheating? Kind of. But really it the entire Space Marine collection that quite literally redefined Warhammer 40,000 in 2019. This book (and it’s supplements) changed the face of 40k. It took the poster boys of 40k and made them really good this year. It’s hard to argue that this book didn’t make a huge impact on the game of Warhammer 40,000 in 2019!

Ossiarch Bonereapers

This book introduced an entirely new army on the Age of Sigmar Landscape. It really shook things from a style-point of view. This book introduced us to some really intriguing models and also has an army with a unique spin on the rules (Relentless Discipline Points vs Command Points). The Ossiarch Bonereapers also added a ton of lore to the world building of the Mortal Realms and it’s going to shake things up moving forward as well.

Kings of War – Third Edition

The Third Edition of Kings of War is out and it has been getting some pretty great reviews across the board. This being the third edition has really cemented Mantic on the map. The second edition was already a sign that the game had some legs but the third edition means that Mantic has created a game popular enough to warrant a third edition – and the players are loving it! Kings of War is becoming the Rank-and-file standard for tabletop wargaming.

Malifaux 3e

Malifaux 3e came out this year as well and sold out in weeks. It’s still sold out by the way. That’s a sign that folks want your product. The core rulebook reworked the game and it has been a smash-hit with players ever since. Malifaux unique fate deck along with the skirmish scale has carved a niche out for Wyrd and (similar to Kings of War 3rd) it’s now cemented as a fixture in tabletop wargaming.

Star Wars: Legion – Clone Wars Starter Set

Yes, this is techincally a boxed set but it DOES have a rulebook inside. And because Fantasy Flight Games doesn’t sell that book seperately, we’re listing it because of what it does for the game. This boxed set means that Star Wars: Legion has 4 factions and it really does feel like a fully fledged wargame at this point. The additional rules included in this box changed the game in a really good way and with the addition of these two new Clone Wars factions, Star Wars: Legion has really come into it’s own. This set paves the way forward for more Star Wars: Legion and was a huge deal for them in 2019!
