Geekery: Only the Strong will Survive in Horror Creature Feature ‘Sweetheart’
Washed ashore on a remote island a young woman has to contend with the elements – and something more sister and dangerous that comes from the depths of the ocean.
Jenn wakes up after floating ashore on an island and finds herself alone, or so she thinks. She uses her resources to create shelter and find sustnence, but it’s her grit that will become her most important asset as she is tracked by a monster from below the waves.
J.D. Dillard uses practical effects for the monster in this, so don’t discount it as another bad CG-monster focused horror movie with shakey cam and jump scares. The story is driven by Kiersey Clemons’ near solo performance that is effective and human – it garnered her some impressive reviews after the movie’s debut at Sundance.
Sweetheart has been picked up by Netflix and will be released on Christmas Day. So if you’re staying in, gather your family around the TV set with some eggnog settle in for 80 minutes of terror.
