‘The Mandalorian’ Season One Spoiler Free Review
Star Wars live-action movies have been a little hit or miss recently. Will The Mandalorian season one have the magic like the animated shows?
It can be easy to have some apprehension about Star Wars these days. The Clone Wars started rough and got amazing. Rogue One is on so many top five lists, but then Rise of Skywalker was… I don’t like to talk about Rise of Skywalker. So when it comes to their live-action streaming series’, does Star Wars knock it out of the park or “Somehow Palpatine Returned” at us?
The Mandalorian Season One – The Good
Against all odds, The Mandalorian manages to take a galaxy that we are all intimately familiar with, and make it feel fresh. It’s Sci-Fi, but it has deep roots in Spaghetti Westerns in the most fun way possible. Every episode is stylized and full of aesthetics, without sacrificing its ability to be exciting, and fun. Minor characters from the novels are visited in ways that won’t confuse non-readers but feel like fun Easter Eggs, and we even get to visit a few new planets. Somehow we even manage to get Mandalorian lore that’s new and unique.
And then, of course, there is The Child. Nicknamed “Baby Yoda” by the fandom, this character’s introduction managed to stay a surprise until the primer, and we all seemed to collectively lose our minds. Who is Baby Yoda? Where is he from? Why do they want him? We’re looking forward to learning more in the seasons to come.
The Bad
There is honestly very little I didn’t like about this and nothing that isn’t an issue across almost all media. It’s a great big galaxy full of endless possibilities, but we always seem to get primarily male casts. And it feels a bit stale for Star Wars to so often treat the desert planets like home base. We get it, Tatooine is important to the general fandom and lore. I’m just glad we got to visit so many other places in addition to Tatooine.
Overall
Everything from the setting to the writing, to the score, to the acting, to the concept art shown in the closing credits adds to the entire feeling of the show. It’s hugely successful at making you feel a certain thing and that thing is fun. This is the Star Wars that makes me feel like a kid and get excited about the future of the galaxy. I want to know more. I want to see which character they introduce or bring back on screen for future seasons. And I want to know everything about The Child and why he’s so important. If you’ve been mad at Star Wars, this is a good way to remind yourself that there are still things to enjoy about the Galaxy Far Far Away.
Have you seen The Mandalorian? Who do you think The Child is and why is he so important? What galactic stories shows would you like to see tackled as live-action shows in the future? Let us know in the comments!
