Even DC Comics Is Getting In On That D&D Action With A New Sourcebook For The Last God
Everyone is getting into D&D these days, including publisher DC Comics, who will soon release a new 5E sourcebook for the dark fantasy saga, the Last God.
DC Comics will be publishing a 5th Edition Sourcebook that takes players into the realm of Cain Anuun. If you’re a fan of the series The Last God, then you already know that the realm of Cain Anuun was once beset by an apocalyptic army of undead creatures that served the last, living god. And that only a band of heroes, venturing out beyond the borders of Cain Anuun were able to stop this threat by killing the Last God and ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity that, like most things set up in the first issue, isn’t really what it seems.
Yes, it seems everyone is getting a piece of the D&D 5th Edition Pie, and DC Comics has picked a swanky new property to push into 5th Edition with. Last October, fans were introduced to the multilayered story of The Last God, which features two groups, thirty years apart, trying to deal with the same overarching threats. Now DC Comics is expanding their world. On April 29th, the new sourcebook: The Last God: Tales from The Book of Ages will debut in comic stores around the country.
Tales from The Book of Ages is a 40-page book that is part sourcebook, part one-shot adventure set in the world of Cain Anuun. Written by Dan Tefler, of Nerd Poker and D&D Beyond fame, The Book of Ages will feature all the lore you’d expect from a gazetteer: a history of the world and its people, important locations, as well as monsters and magic found across the world.
But this is a 5th Edition sourcebook, and that means you’ll find the tools you need to play a game in the world of Cain Anuun. DC Comics has said players can expect to find “compatible content to run your own quests with playable races, subclasses, magic items, monsters and more” waiting inside. That is an awful lot to cram into 40 pages, especially for a world that’s as much map as it is blank space. But if you like the series, then you know that the adventure, from series writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson, is bound to have striking story moments.
And if you’re a fan of Nerd Poker, then you know the kinds of creative shenanigans that Dan Tefler can cook up. So it seems like this one’s worth keeping an eye on. With an April 29 release date, we hope to see more in the near near future.
This is hardly the first time DC Comics has published an RPG, though it is the first time in quite a while. Previous entries by the comics publisher include West End Games’ Batman and DC Heroes rpgs, though those date back to the 80s and 90s–if you’re looking for something from this century, you might also check out Smallville. Whatever the case, the gaming landscape has changed significantly since even 2010–it’ll be interesting to see how The Book of Ages handles the new RPG landscape.
In the meantime, what do you think of the news? Will this be the first of many pushes by a major publisher like DC Comics into straight up D&D? Let us know what you think in the comments!
