Rokugan is on the brink of WAR! The conflicts of the clans are spilling over the lands and all-out war is coming with the next massive expansion in Clan War.

Legend of the Five Rings is a game where the story is ever flowing. With all the plot threats and schemes happening in the current story, the tensions of the clans are a powder keg ready to explode. Clan War explores those arcs and also adds new multiplayer modes to the game!

Clan War expands the conflicts of Rokugan into all-out war with two different multiplayer game modes, the rules of which can be found here. The Enlightenment format sees three or more players racing to claim all five elemental rings on their provinces, while Team Conquest allows four players to join up into two teams to break each other’s’ strongholds. When the clans clash in open war, none can be victorious alone!

Legend of the Five Rings has had beta Multiplayer rules before – but this new expansion now has the final version of those rules along with a new mode – Team Conquest – for even more ways to play. This expansion has ton of multiplayer specific cards but many of them will be useful in standard two player games, too. Let’s take a brief look at some of the new previews.

Clan War introduces some new Provinces for all the different Clans. Because of the slight tweaks to the rules, many of them have abilities that trigger while you have Rings on the Provinces. While this does mean that opponents may be able to claim those rings by taking the provinces, the benefits typically outweigh the risks.

Scorpion has access to Shadowed Alleyway. This gives the player the ability to shift your ring from this province to an unbroken one you control. It’s very fitting for the sneaky clan to play the shell game with their rings.

For Clan Crab, Slaughtered Village makes breaking this province sting as the player can resolve the effect of each ring as if they were the attacking player. That will teach your enemies to attack you!

Crane is all about politics and courtly intrigue. If you break their Ring bearing province, they can use this one to move a ring to another unbroken province. Sure, it’s similar to the Scorpion Clan, but they are less sneaky about it.

Naturally, there are also a ton of attachments, characters, and event cards, too. While some of the cards – like Kobo Ichi-Kai Jujutsu – work in a standard two player game, they get even more powerful in a multiplayer game with many more opponents.

Below we have a look at a pair of lion cards that are also particularly effective. Righteous Akodo gets a +2 political boost while attacking or defending a province with 1 or more rings claimed. For only 1 resource, she’s a great deal.

Privileged Position also forces your opponents to bid low with honor if they want to attack a Lion player. This can really help keep your enemies in check in multiplayer but also can be effective in a standard two player game.

When playing a multiplayer game it’s best to choose your allies wisely. Mostly so you can know who your enemies really are! And if you’re facing down a Unicorn player, get ready for them to rapidly change their targets thanks to Diversionary Maneuver.

This card can shut-down a conflict they are starting only to have a new one spring-up and catch their true target off guard. And it can be against a completely different player!

With all the tricks and traps that can be played, it’s a good idea to become the first player. Especially with the length of a game round as they will get longer the more players you have. Going first, especially when you can play this card for free, could be very handy.

And finally, we have Hige’s Sermon. This card is a pretty impactful card as it allows each player to bow a character they don’t control to bow. Want to target your opponent’s big hitters? Use this card. But beware – it could come back to bite you, too!

Clan War $39.95

ince the launch of Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game, the Great Clans of Rokugan have been teetering on a precarious ledge. Now, in one night, that ledge has given way. New alliances have been formed, old rivalries have been ignited, and the great Clans of Rokugan are prepared for all-out war.

Declare your allegiance with Clan War, a new Premium Expansion for Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game!

This premium expansion, like Children of the Empire before it, that contains a total of 234 new cards. While Children of the Empire focused on an Imperial theme, Clan War instead introduces two ways to bring multiplayer to Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game.

The Enlightenment format sees three players racing to claim all five elemental rings, while Team Conquest allows players to join up into two teams to break each other’s’ strongholds. When the clans clash in open war, none can be victorious alone!

Not only does the expansion include the rules for how to play these formats, but most cards in the set synergize with multiplayer play, and a treaty pad and cards included in the expansion allow you to form and break alliances.

Clan War hits shelves later this year. Get ready for a whole new way to play Legend of the Five Rings!
