Geekery: ‘The Batman’ – First Look at Robert Pattinson in the Bat-Suit
We’ve got a Batman, an impressive cast of villains and allies, and now we have a look at the new suit. It’s got some details that give clues to the story Matt Reeves is telling.
Casting news has taken front and center in the last several months – confirmed cast so far are Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon), Zoe Kravitz (Selena Kyle/Catwoman), Robert Pattison (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Paul Dano (Edward Nigma/The Riddler), Colin Farrell (Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot/The Penguin), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), and John Turturro (Carmine Falcone). It’s a very impressive list.
Reeves dropped a big piece of news yesterday in the form of a video: a first look at the new bat-suit.
It has more organic details than the Nolan suits did, which were all tech all the time. You can see the stitching in the mask and it looks like it’s made of leather vs the rubber-like material used in the past. The shoulder armor looks like something hand made, attached with visible tabs and rivets. The bat symbol on the chest armor is unique – it almost looks like the center section is detachable and used for some purpose. Your guess is as good as mine.
The suit’s details give a sense of what kind of story this is going to be – don’t expect another Nolan, Burton, or Schumacher movie. It also won’t be another origin story, thank gah. The writer/director has stated it’s not based on a particular storyline from the comics, but it will be taking influences from the entire run of the books. It will be more of a detective take and less of the super-hero we’re used to seeing on the big screen. According to Reeves:
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
The Batman is set to hit theaters on June 25th, 2021.
