Tales from the Loop RPG Starter Set – $26.93
As the robot thundered across the rye field towards the police van I realized a line had been crossed, and that it had been crossed many hours earlier that day. Maybe it happened when we broke into the warehouse down at Sätuna, when Olof found that strange backpack. Strange that I didn’t realize it then – when Olof slipped his hand into the big glove and the Thing under the tarp came to life. Or did it happen even earlier, when we ran away from home before lunch? Summer days are so full of events, it’s hard to remember how they all fit together.
Simon Stålenhag is the internationally lauded artist and author of Tales From the Loop and Things From the Flood, narrative art books that stunned the world with a vision of an alternate Scandinavia in the 1980s and ‘90s where technology has invaded the tranquil landscapes to form an entirely new universe of the eerie and the nostalgic.
Now, you can step into the amazing world of the Loop. In this tabletop roleplaying game based on Simon Stålenhag’s books, you’ll play teenagers solving spectacular mysteries connected to the Loop – just make sure you’re home in time for dinner. This Starter Set includes everything you need to begin:
- An illustrated rulebook explaining how to play the game
- A complete Mystery called The Recycled Boy
- Five pre-generated characters ready for you play
- A large, full-color map of land of the Loop
- Ten engraved custom dice
The new set has everything you need to start playing immediately. The pre-gen characters are handy if you’re introducing the system to other people, as it’s very different from other RPGs you might have tried. Tales from the Loop uses the Year Zero engine, which fittingly powered Mutant: Year Zero, the first big hit for Fria Lagan. In Tales from the Loop, your character has to deal with the stresses of solving mysteries that adults seem to ignore or not have time for, while also balancing being a kid with all the normal kid problems.
The game puts as much emphasis on the mundane as the magical, which makes it shine. You might have a moment in an adventure where you’re on the trail of a time-displaced dinosaur or a robot that may or may not be harming the loners and outcasts in your town where you have a fraught conversation with your dad, who is trying his best to keep food on the table and doesn’t understand what you’re going through (how could he?) but wants to be there for you just the same.
These kind of moments, lifted from shows like Stranger Things and E.T., center the experience on the characters, which makes this game shine. For more, you can check out our review, but know that if you want to pre-order the boxed set, now’s your chance–you get a .pdf of the rules just for ordering, and should see your full set arrive in April sometime.
