Star Wars Legion: More Amazing Expansions Headed Our Way
Let’s take a look at some newly announced expansions for Star Wars Legion.
Its a dark time out there, but this week we got a nice bit of hope in the form of more announcements for feature releases from FFG for Star Wars Legion. I wrote last week about how Legion was going strong and had a ton of release coming out, and now we’ve got confirmation on 4 more new sets. Now some of these expansions at least where announced a while ago at GAMA, but this is the official public announcement of them and we’ve got more FFG info on them now, so let us dig and take a look.
Clan Wren
Clan Wren is the first of the four expansions and boy does it look rad. Now while the expansion is called Clan Wren the unit itself seems to be called Mandalorian Resistance (or its some kind of sub faction, based on the wording of some upgrade cards). Anyway you cut this is the unit of heavy and mobile Mandalorian troopers we’ve been wanting forever and it also promises to give the Rebellion some heavy shock troops. Now we don’t know a lot about the stats of the units, but it is cool to see just how customizable they appear to be, with not only options on the models but also for a lot of weapons. We’ve been told there are two unique upgrade choices in the pack, named heavy weapon troopers, which is cool to see more characters get out on the battlefield. Overall for looks alone, this one has me excited.
Inferno Squad
Inferno Squad is the Imperial counterpart to Clan Wren is a similarly flexible special forces unit. Indeed the unit’s actual name is Imperial Special Forces, not Inferno Squad. This has me wondering if both it and the Mando Squad will have some sort of upgrade/title to let them BE Inferno Squad and Clan Wren or not. Again these units are supposed to have a lot of flexibility and options. One cool thing we’ve seen is that like Clan Wren there are two named characters in the box. At least one, Del Meeko, can be taken both in an Imperial Special Forces unit or any Corps unit, so he could lead Shoretroopers for instance. While this expansion is pretty cool for fans of Battlefront II and Inferno Squad I’m less excited about it then I am for Clan Wren. The Imperial’s already have some heavy assault units, and I’m not sure how these troops will stand out from Deathtroopers and Scouts. The Rebels getting heavily armored troops is new, but for the Imperials it’s not. Still we will have to see more about them.
Republic AT-RT
This was one of those units I said a while back had to be coming to the game. AT-RT’s are already a model and I couldn’t see a world where the clones, the original users of them, didn’t get them. Still it’s nice to see that the unit is finally coming out. Now since the AT-RT already exists we do have some idea of how they play, and the big question is going to be how they stack up with the Rebel version.
Comparing the two we can see that the Republic version is 10 points more expensive. For that ten points its gets three upgrades. The first is Scout 1 letting it make a pre-game move. This is could come in handy if you are trying to rush a flamethrower armed AT-RT up the table. The second bonus is the addition of a defensive surge, making it a bit harder to kill. The last one is that the rider has a better gun, gained a black dice and critical 1 and impact 1. Now this gun is a lot better than then the Rebel A-300 blaster rifle, but on the AT-RT you do normally want to attacking with the hard-point main gun if possible, so this is not going to be your primary weapon. The better gun does make me think again this version is better suited to a flamethrower, as not only can it close faster but on the turns the flamethrower can’t get into range it has got more punch. We do still need to see if the Republic version comes with any new hardpoint weapons. All the Rebel ones are keyed to the AT-RT so should work on both (baring an FAQ). If the Republic version comes with a new weapon that the Rebel’s can use we might see that mostly forgotten unit gets a new lease on life as well.
STAP Riders
The STAP was another unit I called way back and was pretty sure was coming to the game. This gives the CIS a fast light unit that has a fair bit of punch. With Speeder 1 and a three move it’s one of the fastest units in the game and offers some flexibility. While it is somewhat of a counterpart to the Republic’s BARC the closest existing unit is actually the Imperial 74-Z Speeder Bikes.
Compared to the speeder bikes, the STAP is cheaper, but hampered/aided by the normal droid foibles. It adds the agile rule, which is nice, but loses the offensive and defensive surges. Overall it’s main gun is better, tough it loses a secondary 360 arc gun. Overall I think the STAP falls into a cheap enough group that it will be useful to run around and annoy the enemy.
Let us know what you think of these new units, down in the comments!
