Warhammer 40K: Minis Designers Talk Ragnar & Ghazghkull
The Miniatures Designers at Games Workshop talk about working on Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull – check it out!
If you ever wanted to know what the Miniatures Designers were thinking when working on the new models for Prophecy of the Wolf, then you’re in luck. Games Workshop has a short video with a lot of info about the new miniatures:
There is a lot going on for both these models. The designers were intentionally trying to make them nods to their previous versions while updating them with the modern tools they have.
Ragnar Blackmane
With Ragnar, there were some key things they wanted to bring back so that he would be iconic and identifiable. For one, the top-knot had to be there. Next up, they definately wanted to keep his chainsword Frostfang around.
But there are some other, more subtle nods as well. Along with the Wolf pelt and other wolf motifs, we also had the ‘boots with claws’ and diamonds on his armor stick around:
Overall, you can clearly tell it’s Ragnar Blackmane but with a fantastic new sculpt and characterful new model!
Ghazghkull
From his humble beginnings from White Dwarf 134 to his current incarnation Ghazghkull has always stood out from the crowd. Partly because of his banner, but also because of things like his eye-patch and Kustom Blasta. His new look incorporates a lot of the previous models and updates them. He is going to be a great model for hobbyists to take a crack at!
One of the big things the Designer wanted to do with this miniature was give folks the chance to play around with the textures on this model. While Ghaz is a giant metal wrecking ball, he’s actually got a lot of different types of metal on the model. There is some flat armor, there is cleaner armor, there is beaten metal, welded metal, sharp claws, and smouldering gun barrels – and probably more. Ghazghkull’s metal frame is a hodgepodge of texture and that’s not counting his skin and cloth. Painting this model is going to be nuts!
Again, there are certainly some big nods to the old model, too. His face and adamantium skull have been an important part of the model and have been re-incorporated. I like the updated skull/horns that have been turned into exhaust pipes on the new model too.
Both of these models have that touch of nostalgia along with a leap forward in model design. It’s going to be great to see both of these on the tabletop!
What do you think of these updates? Was there anything else that jumped out at you from the Miniatures Designers?
