Games Workshop is working on some new Kislev goodies for when Warhammer: The Old World comes – Let’s explore the frozen lands of Kislev!

We learned that GW is planning some really cool stuff for the Kislev range that will eventually be coming to Warhammer: The Old World. It’s still a ways off and we’re looking forward to when it does arrive. That said, we’re taking a moment to look back at what we know about the Kislev from the World-That-Was. And we are also going to compare the new map vs the old map.

Kislev

Kislev is a country located to the north-east of the Empire and is separated from the Chaos Wastes to the north by the Troll Country. It is the most northerly civilised nation in the Old World. Its current ruler is the Tzarina Katarin the Ice Queen.

Tzarina Katarin of Kislev

The empire borders to the south and west, the Sea of Claws to the west, Troll Country to the north and the Worlds Edge Mountains to the north-east and east. Although Kislev’s southern boundary is drawn at the river Urskoy (a tributary of the Talabec), its northern border is much less well-defined. Many take it to be the river Lynsk, although some tribes live north of this river.

The north of the country is barely distinguishable from the Troll Country and the tundra, although more wooded to the east in the foothills of the mountains. It is always cold and infertile land and most who live there are nomads, moving from one grazing ground to another.

The further south a traveler goes, the more hospitable the land becomes, though it is still chill all year round. There is generally a shortage of carved stone so most buildings use uncarved stone or wood, although this is not true for the palaces. These are built with gold in onion-shaped domes and towers. Due to the unforgiving landscape, there are only three large cities, ErengradPraag, and the capital Kislev.

Map Comparison

Here is one of the original maps for the lands of Kislev. You can see that it’s lands were basically the north-eastern barrier between the Empire and Troll Country/Norse.

Here’s a look at the new map for Kislev – or rather parts of Kislev. You can still see the border  with the Empire but it appears that parts of the map have been shifted slightly. It’s also a little hard to tell the scale because we’re only getting a portion of the map. The Rivers seem to be relatively close to their old shape (although they do differ slightly). The area also looks slightly compressed vs the old map, too. That could be because we can’t see the rest of the World’s Edge Mountains to the west.

Kislev is still a barrier for the Empire to the Norse/Troll Country. It’s a cold and brutal land and it has produced a hardy people. We can’t wait to see more from GW and The Old World!
