There are several whirling rumors out there regarding a future edition of 40K and the Necrons. Let’s dive in.

We’ve had three GW Teaser Seminars and so far nothing on a new edition. That said, if there was a new edition coming I would assume GW would delay any word on it for as long as possible, and certainly until the UK’s lockdown is lifted by the Government.

There have been rumors swirling of a new 9th Edition since Q4 of last year, so continued details should be dropping out of the rumorsphere from time to time.

The Rumors

Sete over on B&C with a solid track record reports the following:

  • September a new edition will drop and Necrons will be the new bad guys in the block.
  • Some finecast units might get redone, i think the flayers were brought up.
  • There are rumours of a new Necron codex as well for 9th.
  • A new edition cycle will begin, so ya know what to expect, we have been trough this for a few times now.

Shipping Reports

There are additional reports that an unusually large sized shipment of GW products has been spotted arriving in the US. Some unknown SKU that dwarfs the normal item count size of codex releases.

Previous Rumors

There have been previous rumors of an upcoming Marines vs Necrons boxed set.

Thoughts

Everyone has been hearing for a while that 9th was on the way. The usual time for GW to release Edition updates is mid summer, in the July-August timeframe. Now everything has been thrown off by the quarantine and lockdown orders. That said, a new edition is a major endeavor and is planned out well, well in advance. I would assume that printing and shipments would be well underway by this time if an original target date of mid-summer was correct. This would dovetail into the reports of a large shipment arriving in the US.

As for Necrons, it looks like they are the stars of the last known Psychic Awakening book and there’s something going on with Blackstone that may or may not tie into the mysteries of the Blackstone Fortress game. Their minis range is pretty solid with almost all plastic aside from:

  • Flayed Ones
  • Nightbringer
  • Deciever
  • A bunch of named characters & generic HQs

GW has done plenty of Marine vs X boxed sets, so Necrons are as likely as any. New Flayed Ones would seem a shoe-in, with perhaps more all new items.  The 8th Edition Dark Imperium boxed set introduced the all new Death Guard army, so whoever opposes the Marines, I would expect it to be a majority of all new minis. I’m more interested from a background point of view about the rumor of the Necrons being set up as the “big bads” of the new edition. That would be interesting but with them being a standalone codex – I would expect some big background changes to the game and allies to help them out.

Finally I would assume that September date is a pencilled in fall-back target based on the current pandemic situation. No one knows how this will all shake out, so we will all have to wait and see.

~Have at it. What do you think of this batch?
