D&D Accessories: Make Magic With These Five Spell Tracking Tools
These spell tracking tools aren’t magic, but the effect they’ll have on your tabletop organization just may be.
Magic is one of my favorite parts of D&D, but it can be a lot to keep track of. Damage, range, which dice to roll and when, not to mention spell slots and components are all moving parts with a real effect on the game, and while none of them are terribly difficult to keep track of, I’ve wasted more time than I’d like to admit in encounters flipping through various books to find a spell that I don’t have the card for or didn’t write down as carefully as I could have. Maybe you’re more organized with your spells than I am, and if not, there are tools for that!
Arrow Road Creations
This piece by Arrow Road Creations single-handedly made me want to look more at spell tracking tools. The beautiful scroll motif comes in Elven or Dwarven language options with choice of paint job and tracker-chip colors to help you keep tally of your spell slots and feel like the magic user you pretend to be. When you’re ready to pack it in for the day, the handles screw off to reveal a hollow cylinder to store your trackers and dice in between sessions.

Simple and smart, this isn’t much more than a very small binder to store your spell cards in like you used to do with your Pokemon cards. Clear plastic sheets keep your spells safe, readable, and always on hand without shuffling through a deck or worrying about them falling out of the folder pocket in your notebook and sitting at the bottom of your gaming bag.

A little smaller and a little simpler, but if your style is function and space first, this may be the spell slot tracker for you. The marker tokens come in four styles, and the entire box slides shut for storage and travel. Plus, 3D printed offerings like this are remarkably sturdy and will put up with all of the abuse of being knocked around by all of your game books.

There isn’t a lot of room to write down everything your character sheets – that’s one of the main reasons that I don’t have much more than a spell name and a page number on mine and why spell cards are so nice to have. Or, you can invest in a little spell book for yourself. This simple concept gives you a way to jot down and organize all of the pertinent information for each of your spells and then feel like a wizard carrying around all of your spells in a carefully hand-bound tomb.

This basically perfect spell box is the some of the best multi-tasking in the game. Spell slot tracking? Check. Spell attack and save DC markers? Check. Death saving throw tallies? Sure, why not? The dice tower and loads of storage are just icing on the cake. I’m not going to say you’ll absolutely be the most fancy and most prepared person at your table with one of these, but you definitely won’t be questioning how many spells you have left.
