Geekery: Danny Boyle’s ‘Frankenstein’ is Coming to YouTube for Free
The National Theater has been running their NT LIve program since 2009, which was meant to bring the stage to theaters across the world. Now it’s bringing the stage to your living room.
Danny Boyle’s (Trainspotting, 28 days Later) award-winning production of Frankenstein was filmed in 2011 for the program – 2 performances to get both Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creation. It has an original score from Underworld.
“Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.”
- Thursday’s (April 30th 7pm UK time, 1p CT) stream will be Benedict Cumberbatch as the creature and Jonny Lee Miller as Victor Frankenstein
- Friday’s (May 1st, 7pm UK time, 1p CT) stream will be the reverse with Miller as the creature and Cumberbatch as Victor Frankenstein.
Both will be available for a week after their premiere. The National Theater is using these showings as fund raisers, so if you enjoy them please throw them a coin or twenty via their website, and those in the UK can text NTATHOME 10 to 70085 to donate £10.
