Geekery: New Documentary Gives a Behind the Scenes Look at ‘Beetlejuice’
This new doc digs back into the creation of the comedy horror classic. The filmmakers talked to crew members, and even visited the town where was filmed, to get a look behind the scenes.
Director Fred China has been a fan of Beetlejuice since he was a teen. He was struck by the universe Tim Burton had created, from the music to the the color palette and crazy creatures. It has inspired his photography in years since. This documentary project started as a simple website with a collection of interviews and behind the scene photos and grew into a full feature.
China spent years collecting behind the scenes photographs, press kits, storyboards, and getting to know the folks that worked on the movie. He ran a few crowdfunding campaigns with his partners, and here we are. Check out Documentary For The Recently Deceased: The Making of Beetlejuice…
The list of folks China was able to meet for interviews is really impressive. I’m especially looking forward to hearing more from the design, effects, and puppetry folks – that work is a big part of what makes Beetlejuice the classic that it is.
In addition to all of the interviews the documentary will feature never-before-seen archive footage, including stop-motion sequences digitized in 2K just for the doc. There’s no release date just yet as they’re still in production (small budget, small crew, pandemic), but there are updates being posted on their Facebook page as the they complete things.
