My Alchemical Romance – MCR Frontman Plays D&D, Talks About His Character
Gerard Way, whose lyrics have helped many teens sort through the realization that life is meaningless, celebrated his birthday by playing D&D.
That’s right, Gerard Way, frontman for My Chemical Romance, celebrated his 43rd birthday in the midst of a quarantine by scheduling a D&D game with his friends and family over Zoom by playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Now I can see from the light behind your eyes that you’re questioning whether or not this happened. Well we live on the internet and there’s proof. It’s a far cry from when we were teenagers, and heaven help us if there isn’t a record of this happening. Here’s a picture of the party taken from Way’s instagram feed.

It seems fitting that the man who helped define a generation with the stratospheric collision of raw emotion and defiance and that drum line you can’t get out of your head that is Welcome to the Black Parade would play a Halfling rogue. There’s something almost comforting about the idea that he really does like D&D, Audrey Hepburn, Fangoria, Harry Houdini, and croquet.
It makes a kind of sense though. There’s something about D&D that brings out the angst in all of us, whether it’s drow who feel like outcasts from their society, to firbolgs who want to leave the forest behind and feel what it’s like to really live, to like, everything, about half-elves just screams emo. Not to be confused with screamo though.
So in honor of Way’s birthday, blow off the dust of your old character binder and find the artsiest, emo-est character you ever rolled up and bring them back. Let’s see those Warlocks who made pacts with infernals only to learn once they’re damned that all they want to do is live, or those dhampir nobles who don’t know what to do with all their vampire money.
Oh and don’t forget the black eyeliner. Happy adventuring!
