Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition was announced three years ago today – my how far we’ve come.

The official announcement of Warhammer 40,000 getting its 8th edition was April 22, 2017 – that was three years ago (where did all the time go). Games Workshop dropped a big trailer and everything:

At the time we had an FAQ that answered a TON of questions right up front too:

  • Your Army is still valid, every model – even Forge World.
  • Same Universe – the story is just moving forward.
  • The Core Rules will be FREE
  • Current Codexes are going to be invalid due to rules changes (sorry folks)
  • Points are still around
  • Rules updated annually (a la Generals Handbook)

Now, we’re three years out from that and we can look back at what GW delivered. They not only kept their promise but they delivered so much more. On day one we had Indexes for every army and model that were currently available and GW hasn’t slowed down from there. Three years later, we’ve gotten codexes for every faction in the game and tons of cool new models as well.

Games Workshop has been very consistent with the updates – including Codexes, Chapter Approved, and FAQ/Erratas as well. Now, we’re currently hurtling toward the conclusion of the Psychic Awakening with additional rules announced for every faction.

The past three years have been a pretty wild ride. At the start of the edition there was a lot of concern about how the new rules would work. I was in the room at Adepticon when they announced the return to the old school modifiers for AP and some of the other tweaks. And I can tell you the crowd’s reaction wasn’t exactly overwhelmingly positive – it was more of a confused murmur. But that’s because we only had part of the info – once the edition hit along with all the rules/indexes there was a whirlwind of excitement.

It’s hard to argue that Warhammer 40,000 8th edition wasn’t a success over the past 8 years. Sure, it’s had some issues (looking at you Imperial Knights and now Space Marines) and more than a few power creep problems – but GW has never been as active and open about the game compared to previous editions. They have engaged with the players and fans in a really impressive way for this edition and I hope that they continue to do so.

It’s been three years of Warhammer 40k 8th Edition. There has been a TON of stuff that has happened to the game, the armies and the models – too much to list here. But we want to hear from you in the comments about your favorite things from the current edition of 40k! For me, it’s been the models. They have been absolutely stunning. I’ve also really liked the fast (comparatively) responses from GW for “fixing” things (like the Ogryn Hyperloop). But I’m sure you’ve got your own opinions – so share them in the comments.
