Warhammer 40K: Who Is Illuminor Szeras
The Necron Cryptek has a new model and is looking quite beefy for Psychic Awakening: Pariah – But who is Illuminor Szeras?
Illuminor Szeras is a Necron Cryptek. While the C’tan might have provided the knowledge for the biotransference, it was Szeras who made it a reality millions of years ago. Even then, he saw it as the first step on the path to ultimate evolution.
Szeras constantly labors to unravel the mysteries of life, for he fears that he would be a poor god without the secrets of life at his fingertips. As such, he requires a constant flow of living subjects for brutal experimentation and agonizing testing in his scientific quests. He acquires experimental subjects by raiding the worlds of the younger races. However above all else, he cherishes Eldar subjects, as they inevitably produce more intriguing results then any other of the galaxy‘s living creatures. Though he is obsessed with the secrets of life, his aptitude for augmenting the weaponry and mechanical bodies of other Necrons is peerless. As a result his talents are in high demand by other Necron Overlords. Such is the demand for Szeras that he can name his own price – invariably a harvesting raid of a world of his choosing. Above all, he covets the Eldar for study and experimentation.
Illuminor Szeras’ 5th Edition Miniature
It is known that Szeras waited on Nectavus VI for the day when the Warp would break free and he would behold the death of an entire planet. As around him erupts a cataclysmic event, Illuminor Szeras calls upon his lurking armies and begins to pursue his own inscrutable goals. The obsession of Szeras with the nature of biological life has led him to create new forms of repair on his own necron soldiers, and his experiments (in many cases) have improved the effectiveness of the mechanical bodies of his servants.

What We Know Now
Illuminor Szeras is a classic Necron Character given a new lease of life. For years, we’ve known him as a hellish experimenter, determined to perfect the living metal bodies of the Necrons. Now he’s given himself a serious upgrade. This new model truly reflects his terrifying splendour and alien majesty and is, we reckon, one of the best Necron models ever.
We also know that he’s been hard at work tinkering with Blackstone and has developed some new weapons for the fight against the Warp and Psykers. His constant experimentation has paved the way for the Necrons to re-emerge as a new threat during the turbulent times post-Great Rift.
It’s Just A Theory…
Of all the Necron Characters, why Illuminor Szeras? Well, with the name of the book being Pariah and the fact that Illuminor Szeras has a fascination with biological life, it certainly seems plausible that GW might use Szeras as the catalyst to reintroduce the Necron Pariahs back into the game.
Necron Players have been asking/begging for a way to deal with Psykers and Psychic Powers and this seems like a pretty good fit. I’m personally hoping we see some new, updated versions of these miniatures – perhaps some type of anti-psyker vanguard for the Necrons. Szeras would be the one to do it, don’t you think?
Why do you think Games Workshop went with Illuminor Szeras instead of another Necron Character?
