Real Time Strategy is coming to the Mortal Realms according to an announcement by Elite Dangerous developer Frontier Developments. Check it out.

Elite Dangerous developer Frontier Developments quietly buried the news that they had acquired the license to work with the Age of Sigmar among a trading update earlier this week. But there it is–Age of Sigmar is getting a real time strategy game, making it one of the first major titles for the popular fantasy miniatures game. Here’s a look at the announcement.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar is Games Workshop’s most recent iteration of the globally renowned fantasy setting in which the four Grand Alliances of Order, Chaos, Death and Destruction vie for control of the Mortal Realms.  Unique and distinct in style, and endless in scope, this ever growing universe sits alongside the far future dystopia of Warhammer 40,000 as the most successful tabletop miniatures games in the world.

Under the terms of the Licence, Frontier has the exclusive rights to develop and publish a real-time strategy game worldwide on PC and console platforms, together with the rights for streaming services.  The game is planned for release in Frontier’s financial year ending 31 May 2023.

Now while it’s not Elite Dangerous but in 40K, it will be interesting to see what Frontier Developments brings to the table. The Mortal Realms do seem like a world built for games, whether roleplaying or miniatures, or as we’ll soon see, an RTS. It has many varied terrains all with their own theme, many different factions to control, and a wide variety of cool looking units to recreate in the game that practically have particle effects built onto the models. But it all depends on the execution. Dawn of War III seems to have soured some fans of the genre, though that’s more 40K and another developer entirely.

Frontire Developments goals are to “bring the rich world of Warhammer Age of Sigmar to a wide audience through an immersive and accessible real-time strategy game on both PC and console.”

We’ll keep you up to date with more details as they develop
