D&D: Mythic Odysseys Of Theros Rules Previews
Come take a glimpse inside the upcoming Mythic Odysseys of Theros book, thanks to some spoiled images from Fantasy Grounds.
Make yourself ready to step into the world of Greco-Roman Mythinterpretation as the newest D&D book, Mythic Odysseys of Theros nears its release in just a few short weeks. As the day draws closer, online platforms like Fantasy Grounds are preparing the files for digital release, which means that they’re showing off some of the hard work they’re doing, which means you all get a preview of some of the rules inside the new book. Let’s take a look.
First up, here’s a look at the credits page and the two different pieces of cover art, the top from the standard version, and the 2nd is the special collector’s edition cover. But you’re not here to see the cover, let’s take a look at some of the rules. One of the big changes coming in Theros is the idea of Supernatural Gifts. These elevate the power of a campaign level, reflecting the running theme of demigods that plays throughout Theros. Heroes in that plane are powerful, and that’s reflected in the rules.
What’s interesting is that Supernatural Gifts are meant as options for starting players. While there are certain Natal Omens (which we’ll get a glimpse of later), the other interesting thing here is a variant that basically means everyone gets a starting feat. When everyone’s a variant human, one of the most popular choices, what does that mean for the “generic” option? We also get a look at the other races, which have already been confirmed for the book.
Gods are important to Theros–they’re integrated into the setting moreso than in standard D&D. After all, some of the artifacts included in the book are the weapons of the gods, their influence is felt throughout the book. Here are some of the included options, and interestingly it’s not just the big five either. There’s a whole pantheon here. Fitting for a world inspired by Greek mythology. Let’s look at more of the rules though, here are a few of the magic items you can find in the book:
Sling users can rejoice, as there appear to be a few options for those who want to be more David than Goliath. Sling bullets getting their own special item is pretty neat, though as you can see there are some other promising items including the Siren Song Lyre, which lets you use an action to cast Charm Person, Enthrall, or Suggestion, alongside the Pyxis of Pandemonium, which is also a magic card that introduces a great deal of pandemonium to a magic game:
No idea how that’ll translate into D&D effects, but it’s worth keeping in mind, Maybe some kind of spell slot shenanigans. We also get a preview of the myriad monsters lurking in the new book:
Gold-Forged Sentinels, Doomwake Giants, Leonin NPCs… there’s a lot to look forward to in this bestiary, and as you can see from some of the entries, these are definitely a higher power class of fiend. Finally, here’s a look at the lovely locations of Theros:
Stay tuned for more previews of Theros, and as always: Happy Adventuring!
