Geekery: New ‘Tenet’ Trailer Doesn’t Answer Any Questions – Thankfully
It’s been 6 years since we’ve gotten an original Nolan mind bender that really plays with our ideas of time and reality. Things have been kept pretty quiet about this project, which I’m happy about for once. No one really quite understands what it’s about at this point – even the official synopsis is purposefully vague.
Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.
Tenet stars Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Himesh Patel, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and John David Washington. What is really going on is something we’ll have to wait till its release to figure out. It’s clear that Nolan continues to push the boundaries of how to tell a story – and he’s continuing to mix practical effects with digital by blowing up a real plane.
I’m still stoked about this one and I really want my first watch to be at my local IMAX theater, but I think the July 17th release date they have set is shakey based on what’s going on with the entertainment industry right now. Theaters across the country are not able (or wanting) to open yet and many will only be able to fill to 25-50% capacity – a wide release just isn’t possible, especially if Warner Brothers wants to get any sort of return on the movie’s estimated $190 million budget. There is the possibility of pushing Wonder Woman 1984 back and placing Tenet on August 14th; an extra month may be safer and pull in more people as more theaters are able to open.
As I’ve said before: My couch and home set up aren’t a replacement for a big screen, seat rumbling Dolby bass, and taking in a film with others. I miss going to the theater and I really want to go back. Safety cannot be rushed, however. I’m willing to wait.
