Rumors have been flying since the Oscar Award winner’s The Mandalorian finale episode aired in December. LucasArts has confirmed the rumors and given some details about the project.

Variety interviewed Waititi after his JoJo Rabbit win, and he wasn’t exactly forthcoming.

“Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was. I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to… If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

The rumor was finally confirmed today as part of Star Wars Day celebrations. He’s teaming up with BAFTA and Oscar winning  writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) to write the script. I am psyched to see where this goes. No story details or date just yet.  There are Star Wars movies on the slate for December 2022, 2024 and 2026 that this could fill. Waititi is still actively working on Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel Studios – he talked about script revisions being done on a livestream last month.

They also announced that Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) is set to write/produce a new, unnamed series for Disney+. Rumors have suggested that this will be a female character focused series, which would be an appreciated addition to the current line up of male centric stories. I’d love to see more Cara Dune and her time as a Rebel shock trooper.

Gina Carano as Cara Dune

The Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi series that are still underway, and the second season of The Mandalorian that’s in post-production. The first episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorianthe 8 part behind the scenes doc – is now streaming, as well as Rise of Skywalker. Even the releases are coming slowly compared to what other services are putting out, the line up continues to look great.
