Geekery: New ‘Lovecraft Country’ Trailer Exposes More Horrors
Matt Ruff’s multi-layered horror story hits HBOMax later this summer thanks to Jordan Peele.
This is an adaption of Matt Ruff’s fantastic novel Lovecraft Country. The novel blends Lovecraft’s universe into a tale of 1950s, Civil Rights Movement era America. Atticus Freeman is an Army veteran whose father has disappeared mysteriously – the path to locate him takes Atticus, his friend Leti, and Uncle George across Jim Crow era South and into Lovecraft Country where things get weird. It combines supernatural horror with the real horrors Black people face – and it challenges Lovecraft’s own racist history.
Jordan Peele is an EP and Misha Green wrote the script. The cast has some familiar faces – led by Jonathan Majors and includes Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Kenneth Williams, Abbey Lee, Jordan Patrick Smith, and Jamie Chung.
I really enjoyed the book and the team gathered to bring it to the screen is stellar. I’ll be picking up an HBOMax subscription in order to watch it.
Lovecraft Country debuts on HBO this August.
