D&D BREAKING: Curse Of Strahd Gets Revamped With New Collector’s Edition

Grab your cloak the color of midnight, make sure there’s oil in your lantern, and hire a string quartet to play some ominous music, because the Mists of Ravenloft are calling you back to the blighted land of Barovia, where the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich broods in his castle and terrorizes the populace. Announced just a short while ago through IGN, Wizards of the Coast have unveiled a new collector’s edition of the Curse of Strahd. Titled Curse of Strahd: Revamped, this new set has almost everything from the previous edition, alongside new features like a custom DM screen, postcards from Barovia, a custom Tarokka deck, and a “creatures of horror” booklet.
The only thing you won’t find in the new collector’s edition boxed set are the old depictions of the Vistani that portrayed them with the same, harmful stereotypes that people use to talk about the Romani. We’ve talked about this before, when the D&D team released their diversity statement, one of the key points they highlighted was wanting to go back and remove some of the language that “echoes some stereotypes associated with the Romani people in the real world” so as to avoid relying on “reductive tropes” when portraying the various peoples who live in Barovia.
Now, whether or not the new book succeeds in completely eliminating the stereotyped portrayal is up for debate–the Vistani are still superstitious, they routinely cast curses on people, or hypnotize them with an “Evil Eye.” A new book is on the horizon that supposedly depicts the Vistani in a more positive light. And in the revamped Curse of Strahd, the Vistani aren’t lazy drunkards who love to laugh. The team also removed some of the “pain points” around the depiction of a disabled character as well. According to Chris Perkins: “We started this product in late or the middle of last year, so a lot of what Curse of Strahd Revamped addresses are issues that we saw long before the recent discussions on social media and stuff like that. The recent stuff is going to translate to changes to other products down the road past this one.”
