Geekery: First Look at ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’
This new animated series focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos.
The new 1/2 hour long comedy was created by Mike McMahan, who won an Emmy for his work on Rick and Morty and has written a book on TNG. The story follows ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi as they keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi mysteries, weirdness, and drinking.
Check out a scene from the first episode that debuted at SDCC over the weekend. Note: Bat’leths are not toys.
It looks like a light hearted view of those extras we see walking through the corridors as the main crew talk and running around engineering when things fail – the stories of the red shirts, a workplace comedy that could only happen in the Trek universe. The cast includes Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero, Noël Wells, and Jack Quaid. Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres August 6 exclusively on CBS All Access.
