Warhammer 40K: So Where’s 9th Edition The Starter Set?
“But wait – Indomitus Sold Out…what do you mean?” Indomitus was the Launch Box, not the new Starter Set. Let’s chat.
If you were hoping to get your hands on the Indomitus boxed set, it’s sold out and the scalpers resellers are moving in. I know there is a lot of FOMO going around right now but there is some hope: A new 9th Edition Starter Set. GW has done it before and you know that more products are coming. Just because you might have missed the Launch Box doesn’t mean you’re out of luck when it comes to getting a hold of those models.
Looking Back At 8th Edition
Let’s just take a step back to the current edition (are still technically in 8th after-all). What products did GW put out?
Dark Imperium
This was the starter box for 8th. What made it a starter box? Well it had everything you needed to get started – including a rangefinder and dice. Those are things that are missing from the Indomitus Launch Box. While those are small things, the idea of a Starter Box is that it’s everything you need to get started playing. Except for clippers and glue.
Do we have confirmation that a new Starter Box is on the way? No. But it’s pretty obvious that one is in the works. It’s not like the molds for the Indomitus miniatures are suddenly gone. It would be silly for GW NOT to make a 9th Edition Starter Set. And that’s not even the only product they could make…
Know No Fear: A Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set
Remember this box? This was another box set with a smaller amount of miniatures but it had a play mat, dice, a rangefinder, and the box even doubled as a building. This one clocked in a $80 and was a pretty sweet package. Do you really think GW isn’t going to do something similar for 9th edition?
First Strike: A Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set
Or what about the First Strike box? For $40 this is still available. Again, it had dice, a rangefinder, and a small selection of miniatures from the Dark Imperium box. It still had a play mat as well as those cardboard crates, too.
Each one of these “Starter Sets” were affordable and had the same basic units. It’s not a very far fetched idea that GW is going to take the Indomitus Launch Box, chop up the contents and repackage them into new Starter Boxes.
Maybe the box will have fewer miniatures – or a cropped selection. Maybe the box will include a mini-rule book instead of a large Hard Cover. It’s probably going to have dice and a rangefinder included. It might even have a slightly different “campaign book” in the box, too. Whatever the case, I don’t think this is the last time we’ll see these “Launch Box” models. If you missed out, all hope is not lost!
It’s Launch Box – Not a Starter Set!
How long do you think we’ll have to wait until GW announces a new Starter Set? I’m thinking sometime in August.
