Anime: Demon Slayer Film Breaks Opening Weekend Records
Breaking records and winning hearts, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’s Japanese opening weekend is a bright spot we can all use right now.
This weekend Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train crushed records, grossing $44 million or ¥4.623 billion. This puts it ahead of any other film for the Japanese market to date, including any foreign and western movies. This is especially impressive as Covid restrictions in Japan haven’t been entirely lifted, meaning that in some places, viewership and earnings could have been even higher in a less disastrous year.
Taking place after the first season of the anime, Mugen Train follows Tanjiro and the rest of the Demon Slayer cast as they board the Infinity Train and investigate the 40-something disappearances that have been reported aboard the locomotive. Of course, it’s Demon Slayer, so ridiculously creative monsters, gorgeous art, and a careful sprinkling of meaningful moments and comedy is a given. So far, fans seem to be enjoying the film with ratings above 4.5/5 and generally rave reviews calling Mugen Train “stunning” and “breathtaking.”
North American audiences are told to expect general screenings on February 4th, 2021, and hopefully, with everything going on right now, we’ll be able to enjoy a movie together come February. However, if you can’t wait that long, the movie covers chapter 53 through 69 of the manga.
For me, this is one of the most anticipated animes of the year, immediately drawing me in with the incredibly likable characters and uniquely beautiful and stylized art style, and I can’t wait to see for myself how it looks with a feature-length film’s budget.
