Geekery: The MCU is Growing – New Marvel Movies, Series, and Trailers
Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, Black Panther 2, Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man 3, The Fantastic 4, and so much more.
Disney’s annual investors call was filled with news for Star Wars… and Marvel. All of the series that were announced at 2019’s SDCC – many had to stop production this spring because of lockdowns – now have trailers and most of dates set next year. Fans have a lot to look forward to in 2021.
WandaVision – January 15
Wanda and Vision settle down in a nice suburb, but things aren’t quite right. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany are reprising their roles from the movies and will be joined by Teyonah Parris as a grown-up Monica Rambeau (who you might remember as Maria’s super confident daughter in Captain Marvel – and will be appearing in Captain Marvel 2) and Kathryn Hahn.
Falcon and The Winter Soldier – March 19th
Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) continue thier adventure post Endgame in this series. The pair travel the globe on a mission that will test their abilities as well as their patience. It also stars Daniel Brühl, reprising his role as Baron Zemo, Emily VanCamp, reprising her role as Sharon Carter, and newcomer Wyatt Russell as John Walker.
Loki – May
The series picks up after that one scene in Avengers: Endgame. Loki ends up in the hands of the mysterious TVA aka the Time Variance Authority – that’s right, we’re jumping directly into the Multiverse with Loki as a guide. Tom Hiddleston returns as the God of Mischief and is joined by Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and Richard E. Grant.
Marvel’s What If? – Summer
The comic series flips the script on the Marvel Universe, the animated series does the same with the MCU. Each episode explores an important moment and tweaks it, which leads to stories like “What if Peggy Carter was the one who became a super soldier?”
Ms. Marvel – Late 2021
The Marvel Studios original series centers on fan-favorite Kamala Khan — a 16-year-old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. A great student, avid gamer, and voracious fan-fic scribe, Kamala has a special affinity for Super Heroes, particularly Captain Marvel. However, Kamala struggles to fit in at home and at school — that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life is easier with super powers, right?
There are more series on the way, too.
- Secret Invasion is a crossover comic event that fallows a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn reprising their roles from Captain Marvel.
- Genius inventor and power armor wearer Riri Williams is coming to Disney+ in Ironheart.
- Don Cheadle returns as Warmachine on a mission to save Stark’s tech in Armor Wars.
- Star Wars isn’t the only franchise getting a holiday special. This one is from James Gunn.
And there was some movie news, as well. The third installment of Ant-Man’s story is a go with director Peyton Reed and will include Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. Black Panther 2 (written/directed by Ryan Coogler and due out in 2022) will spend more time in Wakanda and the cultures in the high tech land than than the first movie. Based on a scene in the Loki trailer, I’m betting there will be some overlap there.
And finally, Spider-Man veteran Jon Watts is bringing the Fantastic 4 into the MCU fold. About time.
