RPG Accessories: Snowy Dice

Even down here in Austin it’s starting to get cold, and it’s the perfect weather to curl up with a warm drink and a snowy themed RPG with icy dice to match.

Snow Owl Dice

These dice immediately reminded me of the Icewind Dale cover. The gentle sparkle with veins of blue looks like those almost cartoonishly perfect pictures of icy lakes mid flurry, and the owl symbol for the highest numbers look like they’re meant to represent Auril the Frostmaiden in her owl form. I’m not sure if this is the intent, or if snowy owls are cool animals independent on any D&D iconography, but regardless these may be the perfect dice for your party’s trip up the mountain.

Snowy Mountain Dice

Speaking of your trip up the mountain, this set by FlowerFox looks like they took an entire mountain, shrunk it down, and trapped it in resin for each of the seven dice in this set. They’re ominous and somber and beautiful in the way that real mountains are, each looking just realistic enough to be tiny works of art. Just looking at the various glamor shots of these dice, I’ve gotten lost up the mountain a few times, so I can’t imagine how captivating they would be in person.

Snowflake Dice

A little less haunting and a little more on the nose, this set is almost deceptively understated. In some pictures you can hardly see the detail, making these dice look like sparkly clear and white dice. Some of them even look like small chunks of ice. But in other shots you can get a very clear look at the prismatic effect of the rainbow snowflakes in each dice and they become even prettier. This is a set that would be one kind of cool under one kind of light, but something else entirely in good light. Like an onion or an ogre, these dice have layers.

Marigolds in Snow Dice

If you’ve never lived somewhere where snow and shallow ice filled ponds sometimes suddenly turns up overnight, whatever plant life was hanging on the day before be damned, this my just look like a tiny flower trapped in some sparkly resin. To me, this looks like waking up in the north east to frozen flowers and leaves trapped under thin layers of ice. It’s a kind of cold that I can feel into my bones, even after moving to a climate where I don’t need to worry about frosty mornings or shoveling snow. These dice are simple and beautiful, but they invoke such a specific feeling an I love them for that.

Snow Peak Dice

This set is named after snowy peaks, and it absolutely feels like sitting in a snow storm. The dark blues with light glitters are thick and opaque just like a heavy snowfall, and the flecks of gold and white remind me of how glittery show can be. If you brought these to a winter themed game session they would be right at home, but they’re also universally beautiful enough to work as every-season dice or even just the perfect set for anyone who loves blue and glitter.
