MTG Announces Crossover Sets for Warhammer 40,000 & Lord of the Rings
Wizards of the Coast is about to cross the streams in a BIG way. Warhammer 40,000 and LOTR are coming to a set near you!
First reported by the Wall Street Journal, not only is Hasbro going to spin off WotC as their own operating division, they are supposedly going to announce that both Warhammer 40,000 and Lord of the Rings will both be coming to Magic: The Gathering. This is kind of nuts.
Besides the legal licensing nightmare of these companies working on this project, this sounds like a gamer’s fever dream. “What if Warhammer 40,000 AND Lord of the Rings got Magic: The Gathering sets!” If some gamer off the street told me that, I’d be asking what Gandalf slipped in their pipe-weed. However, multiple sites are reporting the same news and ComicBook.com was “able to independently confirm the reports.”
Is this some unholy game manufacturer alliance? Or will this be the dawning of a new golden age of cooperation and growth for the tabletop industry? Or …maybe it’s just going to be a couple of one-off Magic: The Gathering sets. Either way, both LoTR and 40k have dabbled in the Card Game arena before. LoTR still has a LCG through FFG afterall. So again, the legal and licensing thing sounds like a minefield – I’m just glad I don’t have to navigate it. Hopefully this materializes into some cool new cards and doesn’t go up in smoke before it even happens.
“No, no, no – Warhound, Reaver and Warlord Titans. Yeah – get on that.”
Don’t Cross The Streams. J/K – Cross them up!
