Darth Vader Returns to the Screen in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Series
Big casting news for the Disney+ Star Wars special event series – Hayden Christensen and other prequel actors return.
The series is set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side and follows Obi-Wan Kenobi as he contends with the impact of his apprentice’s actions – both at a personal and galactic scale.
The show has been on pause since early last year due to covid and a search for a new writers after Hossein Amini left the project. It’s rumored that the series was going to focus on Obi-Wan protecting young Luke, but that ended up being too similar to the plot of The Mandalorian. Joby Harold (John Wick 3, Army of the Dead) was eventually brought on to do some tweaking.
It seems that the script is ready to go – LucasFilm took to social media this morning to announce that the project is full steam ahead with production starting soon. Also: the cast!
Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars in Episode II), and Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars in Episodes II & III) return. They are joined by Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), Rupert Friend (The Young Victoria), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Just Mercy), Sung Kang (Power), Simone Kessell (The Crossing), and Benny Safdie (Uncut Jems). Deborah Chow is on as director – she directed two critically acclaimed episodes (Chapter 3 and 7 if you want to revisit them) in the first season of The Mandalorian.
There’s not much beyond that right now – they’re shooting for a release some time in 2022. I’m liking the cast. How about you?
