D&D From The Creators Of Warcraft And Starcraft – Auroboros, Coils of the Serpent
Chris Metzen, co-creator of Warcraft, Starcraft, and founder of the new Warchief Gaming studio is currently working on an epic D&D campaign.
What do you do when one of your party members turns into a major villain? To answer that question, you’ll have to check out the new 5th Edition D&D campaign project coming to you soon from Warchief Studios. Founded in 2018 and given new attention after veteran developer, War-and-Star-craft co-creator and voice of Thrall/Rexxar, Chris Metzen left Blizzard, Warchief Gaming is a “premier development studio focused on creating games and telling stories across all media types.” And their first big project is Auroboros, Coils of the Serpent, an epic campaign setting from Metzen’s own games.
Coming to Kickstarter April 20th, Auroboros: Coils of the Serpent is a 5E campaign setting by Chris Metzen and Warchief Gaming. The first release in this universe, Worldbook: Lawbrand, is based on the roleplaying campaign that Chris ran with his childhood friends in the eighties and nineties, before heading to Blizzard to work on worlds such as Warcraft, StarCraft, and more.
As a 5E compatible source book, Worldbook: Lawbrand gives players and GMs all the tools they’ll need to create their own adventures in this epic fantasy world.
The whole thing is set in a world of Metzen’s own design–in his own words, it’s what he was working on before he started work at Blizzard. And now it’s got a shot at new life with a Kickstarter coming next month. If you watched the video above you’ve seen some of the gorgeous concept art, but also of interest are the powerful new abilities available to players.
Ancient magic flows through the grimy streets of Lawbrand’s bustling Trade-Cities. Tensions between the ruling Sularian Church and the new generation of upstart adventurers threaten to ignite a firestorm of societal upheaval. In the wilds beyond Lawbrand’s borders, long-forgotten races and newly formed cults rise to claim their own territories – and exert their will upon civilization. And beneath it all, the ancient World-Serpent, Auroboros, awakens to devour all…
Filled with new player options to create characters in the world of Auroboros, Worldbook: Lawbrand gives access to five unique new races and four new subclasses. From the aquatic race of the Atsaad to the nature-wielding fighter subclass Wildkeeper, new backgrounds, and other new gameplay features, the adventurers of Lawbrand will be nothing like you’ve ever played before. In addition to character creation options, you’ll also discover new magic items, spells, and “Sigils”, a new form of customization.

Players will have the option of tapping into the Mark of the World Serpent, a dread power that allows players to wield the Auroboros’ magic directly–gaining world-shaping magic that can be used to freeze cities in stone, heal the sick and dying masses, or even shatter mountaintops.
But this power comes with a cost. Using this power opens you up to corruption, despair, and oblivion. It’s a sort of slow descent into the dark side kind of thing.
The Kickstarter will kick off with a new sourcebook full of amazing (and familiar to Blizzard fans) artists, as they invite you to explore the world of Lawbrand. Check it out below.
