MTG: What’s On Deck For 2021 – Strixhaven, D&D, And More
From Strixhaven’s magical academy to the distant shores of the Forgotten Realms, here’s a look at what’s on deck for Magic: the Gathering in 2021.
Wizards of the Coast has leveled up recently, and alongside their new digital duties, they are also looking to increase the pace of their set releases. With Kaldheim already out and Time Spiral Remastered and Strixhaven just around the corner, there’s still plenty to look forward to. What, exactly, you might be asking?
Well, helpful rhetorical device, let me tell you. There are four more sets still coming this year–here’s everything headed down the pipe.
First up, after Strixhaven comes Modern Horizons 2 on June 11th. This is a follow-up to the 2019 Modern Horizons, and marks the second straight-to-modern set for Magic. Inside you’ll find new cards, and a few throwbacks to Modern, along with all your favorite Eternal formats.
This set promises a higher power level and complexity, as well as a few “special frame treatments” and more, details of which will surely be forthcoming as we get closer to release date.
Have you been collecting lots of Fighters, Rogues, Clerics, and Wizards? Well get ready to use them especially on July 16th, when Magic: the Gathering comes crashing into the world of Faerûn for Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Here, the Party mechanic will play a large role, and fans of D&D will find many of the tropes of the game translated into unique mechanics for your next deck.
Then it’s back to the dark and mysterious world of Innistrad. Even saying the name of the plane sounds ominous, like it’s inviting some kind of horror. Last time, it was the world-spanning cosmic horror that was Emrakul being the moon, this time it’s more ‘traditional flavor horror’: Vampires vs. Werewolves. At the preview for the year, we got to see Innistrad Werewolves and Innistrad Vampires, but now we have the names for both sets. First up:
Innistrad Midnight Hunt, which releases September 17th, is chock full of werewolves. Moonlight, monsters, and lots of werewolf creature types and tokens, what more could you want?
Well, given everything we’ve said, probably vampires. Which is where Innistrad Crimson Vow comes into play. On November 19th, you’ll get to see cards relating to “the biggest Vampire wedding in Innistrad history.” So be sure and get your familiar to clean your opera cloak and maybe pick up someone who’s got O- blood for a wedding gift.
But before any of that happens, it all kicks off with Strixhaven: School of Mages on March 25th. The reveals will be coming fast and furious, so be sure to check back for what’s new then.
In the meantime, it looks like the year is just packed full of magic.
Which set are you looking forward to most?
