RPG: Loop Hero Is A Love Letter To Gaming’s Past
The world has vanished, but you can rebuild it in this deckbuilding roguelite that is an homage to RPGs past in all the best ways.
Most games that involve a lich wanting to desroy the world don’t typically start with the lich actually doing that. And yet, in Loop Hero, your first few moments are exactly that–The Lich throwing the world into a timeless loop that sends its inhabitants into neverending chaos.
After the game sends you through this cataclysmic beginning, you find yourself in control of a lone adventurer, who walks the entire world, which is thus far just a single loop. It’s a winding path full of danger, and this game puts you in control, not of the hero, but rather of the world around them. You’re building every iteration of the loop.
Over the course of the game, which blends deckbuilding and base management together, you’ll battle monsters and unlock cards that can be used to place the terrain around you. As you place different elements of the world, you’ll find different things that used to exist in the world–forests, rocks, and the occasional thing like a shrine or lamp which can help illuminate the way.
But you’ll also find more dangerous cards–cards that create monster lairs that spawn rarer and more dangerous resources. And with every passing day the world gets more and more dangerous until you either rest and the whole thing resets, or you die and lose much of crucial resources you’ve gathered.
You’ll want these resources to build out your town/base/camp. The more you can construct the more you unlock, and the more you unlock the more powerful your hero gets until eventually, if they’re lucky, they might come in for a showdown with the lich. It’s an immensely satisfying gameplay loop that hearkens back to the RPGs of days of old.
And underneath it all, some of the most interesting lore for Liches and other classic RPG monsters out there. It’s definitely worth checking out if you love fantasy, dungeon crawling, and deckbuilding.
