Warhammer 40K: Drukhari Combat Patrol is GW’s Best
There have been ups and downs in the new Combat Patrol starter sets, but the Drukhari box is superb!
Games Workshop is always evolving its product lines. Once upon a time, there were no sets aimed at new players, and you had to collect every last thing a la carte. OH, THE HUMANITY! Then slowly came the web bundles that tied some useful (or more often just released) units together with no discount at all.
Finally, GW got it together and started the “Start Collecting” series a few years back. Finally, we got starter boxes per faction, aimed at players just getting into the game. and we got a whole lot of them:
There were boxes for all the factions in both Warhammer 40K, and Age of Sigmar. But there was some unevenness. While the prices were great – clocking in at around $85, the discounts were all over the place. Some were super deals at almost half off, while others were almost full price for the component kits.
With the advent of 9th Edition, at long last the “Start Collecting” range phaseout began with the Combat Patrol line taking its place. These were a little pricier, but again the discount was variable.
Enter the Drukhari
After years of looking at the starter sets – I have to say I am really, really impressed with this one. Let’s Break it down:
- Archon
- Warriors x10
- Incubi x5
- Raider
- Ravager
That is a fantastic way to start a Drukhari army. The Archon, Warriors, and Raider are expected. The Incubi are the indulgence unit, but it’s the newest unit in the range. They are super killy, and just beautiful sculpts. I still shudder thinking about the constantly breaking older metal Incubi. Then the real cherry on top is the Ravager. A really solid choice – and surprising for such a box aimed at beginners. It will be really easy to take one or two of these boxes and have the core of a super effective army – that is easy to add onto. The theme is solid utilitarian units that can maneuver, lay down heavy firepower, and clinically assault with force when needed.
For comparison, look at the previous Drukhari Start Collecting set:
The older set was all Wyches and assault all the time, and really a brittle ultra-risky set to try to use on the table – especially for a set aimed at a beginner. I think the new one blows it away easily.
In any case, I’d rather take the new Drukhari one built on the back of useful general-purpose units, rather than the oddball themed list like the recent Typhus-based Death Guard one we just saw:
