D&D: Chris Metzen’s New 5E Campaign Is The Best Way To Play A Salamander Person
Ex-Blizzard visionary Chris Metzen’s first foray into 5th Edition is Kickstarting now. Packed with new player content: Auroboros, Coils of the Serpent.
You might not be personally familiar with Chris Metzen, but I can almost guarantee you’ve played in a world influenced by his design. Formerly the Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development at Blizzard Entertainment, Metzen created the fictional universes for Diablo, Starcraft, as well as influencing the development of Warcraft from 2, onwards. He also voiced Thrall and “an unspecified number of bosses” in World of Warcraft.
So, again, you’ve probably already played in one of his games. This is why, at press time, Metzen’s new 5E campaign had already raised more than $500,000 in under 24 hours. But Coils of Auroboros has a lot more than just reputation going for it–it promises a world of high-powered fantasy and opens up new subclasses, new races, and more–but most importantly, you can play as a Salamander Person.
Seriously. One look at the picture of new races and the only thing that matters is the salamar. The rest look cool too, don’t get me wrong. Who wouldn’t want to play an elf with a wolf, or a short warboy? But the salamar stands triumphant. And when you take up the reins of your salamander hero, you’ll also have the option of playing one of four new subclasses:
The Wildkeeper looks to be the druidic version of the eldritch knight, blending nature powers with your natural strengths as a fighter. Meanwhile, I’m pretty sure I’ve played the wraithblade in a video game before. Stealth, two daggers, and shadow powers would be my guess. The way of eminence opens looks like mind powers for monks, while warlocks get vicious green snakes with the souleater.
And that’s all before you tackle the corrupting power of the Mark of the Serpent, which promises to let players take on tremendous power but at the risk of potentially devastating side effects. Channeling the power of the thing that gives the setting its name is not a risk-free endeavor, after all.
There’s a ton of stuff in this Kickstarter though. Coils of the Serpent introduces the world of Lawbrand with its own worldbook, and stretch goals include files for 3d-printing your own miniatures to go along with it. And from the momentum it’s already built up, this one’s probably gonna go far, folks. Check it out.
Auroboros: Coils of the Serpent is a campaign setting for 5E by Chris Metzen and Warchief Gaming. The first release in this universe, Worldbook: Lawbrand, features the realm of Lawbrand, which is based on the roleplaying campaign that Chris ran with his childhood friends in the 1980s and 1990s, before he headed to Blizzard to work on worlds such as Warcraft, StarCraft, and more.
Featuring dozens of pieces of stunning artwork, over 100 pages of lore, 5 new races, 4 subclasses, new spells, and more, Worldbook: Lawbrand gives you all the tools needed to adventure in this gritty fantasy setting.
Will you tame this new world, or shatter it?
What is Lawbrand? A realm unto itself featuring eight Trade-Cities, packed full of dangerous factions, frightening enemies, and the power of the Auroboros. In the distant past, it was pushed to the brink by cataclysmic events, mysterious cults, and sprawling underworld crime syndicates. But now, who knows what strange powers lurk in the cracks of this realm?
