Let’s take a look at a unit that is liquefying the opposition, the twisted Drukhari Wracks.

In the ever-shifting meta of 40K, armies rise and fall. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about armies that are hot or not, but a lot less time looking at units that are running the show. Today let’s start by taking a look at one of the hottest units currently running around the tabletop.

The Unit

This week’s hot unit are Wracks. They are the basic troops of the Haemonculus Covens. They are primarily a close combat unit, and not a bad one. However they do have access to a limited number of ranged weapons that can augment their offensive powers.

Why They Are Good

It would perhaps be unfair to say that Wracks were “bad” before their new codex. They’ve had a place in the army for quite some time, especially in Coven based armies. Among Drukhari troop choices they are the most durable of the three options, with T4 and a 5+++, which can be further buffed. This makes them one of the better options for holding objectives. They also are no slouches at close combat, and being a cheap choice can be taken in numbers.

However, none of this is why they are currently showing up in lists that are dominating the meta.

Wracks have popped up as a power anti-Marine unit thanks to the Dark Tecnomancer obsession. For 60 pts you can get a 5 model unit of Wracks armed with a pair of Liquefier guns. Enhancing these weapons gives you 2d6 shots, that wound most Marines on a 3+, have AP -2, and do two damage. As they auto-hit, they ignore all of the downsides of the Dark Tecnhomaners obsession. This makes a cheap unit of Wracks a very versatile unit, as they can hold objectives and absolutely decimate more expensive Marine units with shooting and combat.  Overall they are a highly points-effective unit.

A Sample List

Saying a unit is hot is all well and good, but let’s take a look at how players are using it. Wracks have shown up in a number of lists that have really dominated at recent tournaments. One list that highlights them is the following:

Using the Unit

Looking at the list we can see that Wracks are only a small part of Jeremiah’s list. Like almost all the winning Drukhari lists, they make use of a large toolbox of units. This list runs 3 units of 5 Wracks. This not only fills out a detachment but also keeps them cheap allowing him to take a ton of other units. They act as objective holders and a strong anti-Marine unit. It’s easy to see how a block of these can be fast and deadly.

Let us know what units you think are hot right now, down in the comments!
