Warhammer 40K: Codex Check-In
Warhammer 40,000 still has a lot of codexes left to go. But who’s next and who’s coming soon? Time to check in to find out!
It’s seems like it’s been a while sense we’ve seen anything on the Warhammer 40,000 codex front. At the the start of the year it was all Dark Angels and Drukhari. Then there were shipping issues, delays, and two-week break from GW in shipping products. That was on top of an already backed up schedule due to 2020 being 2020.
The 2021 Chapter Approved has landed and there were some points changes that didn’t even make sense regarding a pair of armies that were supposed to have codexes by now, but still don’t. And that got us thinking – Were are we at with the 40k side of the house and their codexes? What’s been confirmed and who else are we waiting on?
Confirmed Codexes
First up, the two codexes that should have been released by now but got pushed back. WAY back, apparently:
The Thousand Sons book and the Grey Knights book. GW had the cover art for them and (apparently) had even created the points and planned for a points adjustment in the Chapter Approved. I don’t think you can get much more confirmed than that and still not have a book available.
The next entry on the list is the upcoming Codex: Orks. This could also be called “The Arrival of the Beast Snaggas” and their entirely new line of Ork models and more.
And that’s pretty much it. Only 3 codexes have been revealed with an official picture from Games Workshop and we’re more than 1/2 way through 2021 at this point. We’re also still waiting on the second act in the War Zone Charadon series:
That book is supposed to have the Be’lakor update for 40k as well (and hopefully we’ll see a another run of his model for stores, too).
So, again, for 40k those 4 books are all we have confirmed with an official picture so far. Everything else is still up in the air.
Who’s Missing?
Everyone else! There are lots of armies that don’t have a 9th Edition update. For brevity sake, let’s just skip all the Imperial Space Marine chapters. Here’s the rest:
- Adeptus Custodes
- Astra Militarum
- Imperial Knights
- Inquisition (and subfactions)
- Chaos Daemons
- Chaos Knights
- Chaos Space Marines
- Craftworld Aeldari
- Genestealer Cults
- Harlequins
- T’au Empire
- Tyranids
- Ynnari
As you can see, it’s quite a few armies that have been left hanging. We will have to collectively wait a bit longer as the new edition for Age of Sigmar is landing in stores and that’s what Games Workshop’s main focus is on right now. It’s a good edition from what we’ve seen so far if that’s any consolation for 40k fans who have been waiting.
Personally, I’m just hoping that GW uses this bit of a breather from 40k to get the next releases right. It’s clear that there have been a lot of timelines for product release that have shifted and things look uncertain from the outside. That said, it’s been impressive to see them maintain a stead stream of releases when many other companies and games had to hit the pause button. It hasn’t been perfect but the releases have kept coming. Hopefully things get sorted out and the new codexes start to show up in the back half of the year.
At least we got all our Space Marines first, right!?
What codex(es) are you most looking forward to getting your hands on?
