SDCC 2021 Comes Bearing Gifts of Trailers – ‘Evangelion’, ‘Blade Runner’, More
SDCC at Home has delivered a bunch of awesome first looks.
Neon Genesis Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time
Hideaki Anno said goodbye to the franchise he created with the release of the fourth and final film earlier this year in Japan. This is the final goodbye – the movie covers the final battle between humans and the angels. It launches exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the states on August 13th, along with the other three chapters of Rebuild of Evangelion.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus
The story is set somewhere between the two movies and focuses on a replicant named Elle. Her true purpose is unknown to even herself, but she has something to do with the change from Tyrell Corporation to the Wallace Corporation in 2049. More pieces of the puzzle will be put into place. As far as I’me aware there’s no connection to Shinichirō Watanabe’s trio of shorts that came out in 2017.
The thirteen episode series is an Adult Swim and Crunchyroll original from diretors Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama with animation studio Sola Digital Arts. It arrives at some point this fall.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2
The animated comedy series is back with more hijinks and jokes about the beloved space exploration universe. The season drops on August 12 on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Prodigy
A group of unlikely heroes comes across an abandoned experimental ship – the U.S.S. Protostar – and decide to use it to explore the stars. They are helped on their journey by a hologram of Captain Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew) both in operating the ship and becoming a tight knit crew. Mulgrew spoke a bit about her role at the panel.
“She’s Janeway at her best. She’s there to help this motley crew… get this defunct ship working. And she does. She is the essential Captain Janeway. She’s full of, I think, warmth. She’s going to help these kids. She’s determined to help them get off this very, very dangerous and dark planet and into a much better place. A different galaxy. So she brings to bear on this task all of her skills and most of them are deeply human.”
The show will debut on Paramount+ this fall.
Ultra City Smiths
This is an animated thing that’s going to be on AMC’s new streaming service. It’s… odd.
The Ultra City Smiths story unfolds via the stop-motion animation of baby dolls repurposed as a grown-up cast of characters. The series hinges on an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of fictional metropolis Ultra City’s most famous magnate (Kurtwood Smith). Two intrepid detectives (Jimmi Simpson and Da’Vine Joy Randolph) follow the case, rallying to fight against their city’s dangerous corruption, at a high cost to themselves and their families, all in pursuit of a gentler place to call home.
Heels
Small towns tend to be hyper focused on football – this one has indie wrestling, and drama in and out of the ring. This series from the writer behind Loki kicks off on August 15 on STARZ. This clip shows they put in the time behind the scenes. You can check out a trailer here.
