D&D: A 10th Level Finale For Magic The Gathering’s Adventures In The Forgotten Realms

The thrilling conclusion to the adventure that puts the adventure in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms will challenge even a veteran party.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realm continues to be one of the most exciting sets ever released for Magic: the Gathering, and you can take it for a spin right now either in your very own friendly local gaming store, or online in MtG: Arena where you can also dig into Jumpstart: Historic Horizons. But you can also see what makes this Magic/D&D crossover a dream team on the D&D side of things too, thanks to the tie-in adventure that the MTG team put together.

It all started with In Scarlet Flames as adventurers found themselves in pursuit of a renegade mage looking to inherit the planeswalking power of a parent who came to Faerun from a distant plane. Now after fighting with ghosts, delving through meteors fallen from space, and more, the time has come to confront the mage, Tyreus in From Cyan Depths.

The thrilling thing about this finale is that it is aimed at players of level 10, making it one of the few adventures that’s built to target higher tiers of play in the first place. This adventure also includes bonus character sheets for Chandra, Liliana, Kaya, Narset, and Yanggu in D&D character form, so be sure and check those out, there’s one for every color of the Magic: the Gathering pie. Now on to the adventure.

From Cyan Depths is the finale of the five part series, and it culminates with a showdown of the villain that players will have been learning about since the beginning (but never actually having the chance to fight until now). Tyreus has been summoning mercenaries in the High Moors working on a plan to build an army at a magic fortress.

This sets up a classic D&D trope: hunt the wizard down to their lair and assault them in a magic dungeon full of magic nonsense. It has worked since time immemorial in D&D, from White Plume Mountain to Undermountain to Tomb of Horrors and beyond. The game might be called Dungeons & Dragons but it SHOULD be called A Wizard Did It.

And they do. Every time. What this adventure really nails down though is the sense of pacing in this adventure. The Fortress of the Cobalt Mage is not one where the NPCs sit passively. Tyreus is hoping to confront the adventurers in his place of power, he’s actively recruiting mercenaries to defend his holdings/form an army to take over the Sword Coast, it’s very much a climactic set-piece. Everything about Tyreus’ fortress is. It’s made up of castles conjured from different memories and worlds, there are Mercenaries, representing a great new NPC statblock for lower level adventures, as well as an example of how you can take a PC class like a Wizard with the Illusion subclass and turn them into a legendary encounter. You’ll find more magic items to play with as well, but this adventure is mostly a rollicking throwdown that brings out the best in D&D.
