D&D: Take A Look At The Voices Of Critical Role’s ‘The Legend Of Vox Machina’
Critical Role’s Legend of Vox Machina speeds towards its release, and we all get to once more take a look behind the scenes with the Voices of Vox Machina.
It feels like Critical Role’s $11,000,000 Kickstarter happened a lifetime ago, but it turns out it’s only two years–which is an incredibly fast turnaround time for an animated series. But the work continues at rapid pace, even with Covid-19 related delays and everything. Today we get to take another look behind the scenes, this time at the “voices of Vox Machina” which is a little more in-depth than you’d think.
Because, while the voice actors who play the characters on Critical Role are there to play their characters once again, but… how do you direct people who already know what they’re doing? How do you go beyond one of the most successful actual plays to make an amazing show? For the answer, we turn to Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.
In the fourth part of our behind-the-scenes documentary series, the Critical Role cast step into the recording booth to bring new life to Vox Machina with the guidance of The Legend of Vox Machina’s voice director, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn!

McGlynn, who played Zahra Hydris in Campaign 1 and watched the series, is perhaps much more widely known for providing voices for some equally legendary characters, including Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Lieutenant Matilda from Mobile Suit Gundam, who has also directed more than her fair share of shows, including working as ADR Director on Naruto Shippuden.
But you don’t just meet the new voice director in the behind the scenes featurette–you also get a look at the lengths that the cast had to go to in order to keep recording during the isolation/remote work necessitated by the ongoing pandemic.
At the outset of recording, the cast was working together in a group setting… but they quickly had to switch and adapt to Zoom, like just about every other business that could work remotely, often with the cast talking out of their closets and or home studios. Though the pandemic has sort of forced a slow down on everything, it seems like there may soon be much more to share.
As the Legend of Vox Machina nears completion and as the side-sessions of Exandria Unlimited come to a close, we’re all excited to see what’s next for Critical Role.
