The beloved retro-inspired action-adventure movie is getting a sequel set after WWII.

The movie didn’t do tremendously well when it came out in theaters in 1991, but it’s gained a large and dedicated fanbase over the last 30 years because of its style and old-school action-adventure roots. It’s based on a graphic novel by Dave Stevens that was published in the early 1980s – the artist/writer was heavily influenced by the Saturday matinee serials of the 1930s; especially the leather bomber jacket, helmet, and jetpack wearing Commando Cody.

The story focuses on a stunt pilot named Cliff (Bill Campbell) that finds an experimental jet pack. He’s not the only one that wants it – a group of Nazis is convinced it will help them take over the world and they are willing to kill to get it. It’s a great period superhero story that replicates the lightheartedness of the original serials. It also stars Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, and Paul Sorvino.

You can watch the 1991 movie on Disney+ right now. If you’ve never seen it – make the time. It’s got that great feeling that The Mummy with Brendan Fraiser has and I’m sure it’ll become a fast favorite you’ll want to watch on rainy days.

The reboot/sequel is being helmed by David Oyelowo (Selma, Star Wars Rebels) and his production company that has an exclusive first-look deal with Disney. He’s also edging to star as the adventure hero. According to the small bit of story detail released by Deadline, it looks like we’re moving up to post WWII.

‘The Return of the Rocketeer will have an all-new creative directive, with Ricourt’s story focusing on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the Rocketeer mantle.’

I really like the original and I’m hoping this new take will learn from its strengths. The last thing we need is a dark and moody Rocketeer.
