‘Lovecraft Country’ Creator Misha Green is Writing a ‘Black Canary’ Solo Movie
Dinah Lance, the Black Canary, is returning to the screen in her own movie with a fantastic writer at the helm.
Misha Green – the writer behind last summer’s hit Lovecraft Country – is adding a ‘Black Canary’ solo movie to her long list of projects. Jurnee Smollett has confirmed she will reprise her role from Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey.
Guess the Canary is out of the cage! So excited to finally embark on this adventure with my creative soul sis @MishaGreen. #blackcanary #dinahlance #lettttssssssgoooooo ahhhhhhhhh!!!!! https://t.co/GocuNdEn6E

Nothing is known about the plot of the new project, but there are a lot of places in the comics to pull from for a movie. Dinah Lance aka Black Canary is one of the oldest characters in DC – her first appearance was in the 1940s, she started by infiltrating criminal syndicates. She as designed by DC legend Carmine Infantino. Black Canary has been a crime fighter since her inception. She’s world-class hand-to-hand fighter with mastery of multiple styles from bare knuckle boxing to aikido with a supersonic cry.
Smollett’s take on the character is great – no-nonsense, confident, a bit reserved but always ready to take down someone doing wrong. It’ll be interesting to see if this is going to be direct offshoot of 2020’s Birds of Prey or if Green is going to start with something new. Also curious to see who else will show up in the story – will they bring Cheshire or White Canary to the screen?
What are your hopes for the movie?
