MTG: Brandon Routh Heads Up The Upcoming Netflix Magic Series
Netflix’ upcoming animated Magic: the Gathering series has recently cast Brandon Routh in the lead role. Superman is a Planeswalker confirmed?
Magic: the Gathering has had a bit of difficulty trying to get their animated series up and running, but after the bumps of the past few years, the show finally seems to have found its feet with both a new producer Jeff Kline, who is best known for animated shows like Jackie Chan Adventures: Men in Black: The Animated Series and Transformers: Rescue Bots, who replaces Joe and Anthony Russo, best known for their MCU work, and now–a new star in Brandon Routh.
Routh, who played arguably the best Superman this side of the DCU, is also known for being in Arrow and The Flash. And soon, he’ll be taking up the role of Gideon Jura in the upcoming series, which expands on the stories of the Planeswalkers. So you can expect to see Elspeth, Jace, and I’ll buy a hat and eat it if Nicol Bolas doesn’t show up in there somewhere.
Not much else is known about the series right now, other than Kline has brought in his own creative team including writers who worked on Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: Clone Wars, as well as a new animation team. Bardel Studio has left the project, replaced by Snowball Studios, who worked on the recent Muppet Babies reboot.
All that heralds a troubling production environment, but at least the bumps seem to have smoothed out for now. Based on the production team, it feels like the whole thing will be aimed at a younger audience, which is an interesting path for Magic: the Gathering, but given the team we’ve seen so far, if anyone can pull it off, it’s them.
Magic: the Animated Series will be released somewhere in 2022.
