MTG: Magic Reveals New D&D Crossover – Battle For Baldur’s Gate
Adventures in the Forgotten Realms brought the world of D&D to Magic: the Gathering for the first time. But it won’t be the last.
Have you been playing Adventures in the Forgotten Realms? Odds are good if you play Magic, you have been. According to Mark Rosewater, AFR is one of the best-selling Magic sets of all time. Which works out because it sticks the landing so well in trying to capture what makes D&D…D&D.
It’s a fantastic set that will help power decks for years to come. But we’re not here to talk about AFR. We’re here to talk about how AFR was only the beginning. At the Magic Showcase yesterday, Wizards of the Coast unveiled a new D&D expansion. This one rife with Mind Flayers and scenes that look like they’re straight out of Baldur’s Gate 3.
This preview image heralds the Battle for Baldur’s Gate and we’ve seen it before… it’s the same Nautiloid ship visible in the opening cinematic to BG3. Get ready for some eye horror and let’s rewatch it.
Yeah that’s the good stuff. All of this takes the shape of a new Magic block. As WotC puts it:
The debut of Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms brought a mix of Magic and D&D to life in amazing ways—with many more stories and characters from the Forgotten Realms to share. Focusing on the city of Baldur’s Gate and building on the Commander-first gameplay of 2019’s Commander Legends, our return to Commander Draft with Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate brings in iconic characters, new mechanics, more flavorful spells from D&D, plus Commander Legends-style foil-etched legendary creatures—all packed into an even greater social experience.
Be ready when the battle begins in the second quarter of 2022.
Baldur’s Gate AND Commander. Get ready for mind flayers and legendaries.
Happy Adventuring!
