‘The Mandalorian’ Used Fake Art and Script to Keep that Big Cameo a Secret
The producers of The Mandalorian had to hide that big finale cameo from more than just audiences – they faked out the cast and crew, too.
The latest episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian revealed how they kept Luke’s cameo in the final episode of season two a secret. They told the production crew and the actors that they would be encountering Jedi Master Plo Kloon. Even going so far as to creating a fake script and concept art.
Plo Kloon was a member of the Kel Dors, the alien race had to wear breathing masks that covered their eyes and nostrils to survive in oxygen rich environments. He was a member of the Jedi Council and a recurring character on The Clone Wars; he mentored Ahsoka Tano. He also died in Revenge of the Sith, which makes it a little hard for him to show up on the timeline when The Mandalorian takes place. He was killed as the result of Order 66 while on Cato Neimoidia.
The fake script brings him back to life with a sentence.
The cast didn’t know until much later in filming that it wasn’t the Plo Koon, but Luke. At least one of the show’s cast went with the ruse until that point. Katee Sackhoff talked about the switch-a-roo during a charity stream earlier this year.
“That’s who we thought that it was at the end of [The Mandalorian Season 2 finale]. That’s who we thought it was, was Plo Koon. That’s who we were told it was, and I’m a very gullible person. When somebody tries to tell me something, I say ‘Okay.'”
Just goes to show how far studios will go to protect major plot points and cameos. At least this cast was good about keeping the secret during press junkets (unlike a certain Marvel actor.)
