Warhammer 40K: Black Templar Primaris Time
The Black Templars are getting an update. Here’s what we want to see get the Primaris Treatment.
Games Workshop hinted TWICE yesterday that the Black Templars were going to get an update. The first was the Emperor’s Champion revamp out of nowhere. The next was a hint that was buried in a Kill Team post.
“Going forwards, we’re looking at ways we can make sure you don’t miss out on other awesome box sets too. So if, for instance, there was a sweet new Black Templars launch box on the horizon (just imagine that!) then that also sounds like the sort of box we’d want to make sure you could all get your hands on.”
Emphasis added. But that’s pretty on the nose, don’t you think? Especially inside a Kill Team post that is (mostly) unrelated, right? But it does hint that a “sweet new Black Templars launch box” is on the way. But that got us thinking – what would we like to see from the Black Templars in terms of units getting the Primaris Treatment? We’ve got a list. Let’s dive in.
Emperor’s Champion
This is clearly the prototype that GW is going to follow here. I really like the subdued armor scheme with a lot of the chapter iconography removed. Except for the shoulder pad, because of course. If this is the aesthetic for the BT moving forward, I’m excited about it. Also note the champion’s sword is chained to his wrist. That’s also a thing the BT do.
Sword Brethren
I really just want to see the Sword Brethren to get the Bladeguard Veteran treatment. Infact, start with those models, shave off the iconography (so they look more like the Emperor’s Champion) and you’re pretty much set.
Neophytes
One of the most unique things about the Black Templars was the fact that they have Initiates and Neophytes fighting together in Crusader Squads.
These squads were sometimes clunky and over the different editions caused issues with players confusing how the mixed armor saved work – until that was pretty much scrapped later on. And now, GW has the perfect unit to swap over to Initiates for the Black Templars: Reivers.
They still have the same 3+ armor save so no mixing up or confusing that mess. And they could add some uniqueness and extra punch to a Primaris Intercessor unit in the form of Reiver models. It’s a win-win.
Chaplain Grimaldus
The High Chaplain of the Black Templars is one of their few unique Characters and it seems like he would be a good candidate to undergo the Primaris Protocol. Plus, he’s got Servitor Attendants who carry chunks of an Imperial Temple with them. Let’s Primaris-ize all of them! A new Primaris Chaplain, new Primaris Servitors, and new Primaris’d Imperial Temple Chunks!
Let’s make them even more epic and grimdark than they already are!
High Marshal Helbrecht
The High Master of the Black Templars has got to take the plunge first, right? How can he lead his new Primaris Men or order his classic marine brothers to endure the Primaris Protocol if he won’t take the trip himself? I’m sure between his Dornian Stubbornness and Righteous Zealotry he’ll make the jump just fine! And hey, if he DOES get enhanced, maybe he’ll finally be able to hunt down Ghazghkull and fulfill that oath he swore to slay him. Wouldn’t that be an interesting campaign to play out?
Oh…Right.
Land Raider Crusader
Look, the Black Templars pioneered this variant. It’s time to slap some Hurricane Bolters on a Repulsor can get to work!
Assault Primaris Inceptors
If there was a chapter crazy enough to do it, the Black Templars would be pretty high up there on the list. Just tossing that out there…
