Warhammer 40K: Black Templars – Which Character Should Stay And Who Should Die

If the Black Templar characters were stuck in a game of Kiss, Marry, Kill, I think we know which one would be safe from the “kill” state.

You’re probably familiar with the dumb game with a very NSFW title. We’re calling it “Kiss, Marry, Kill” but you can swap out the “kiss” with something way more vulgar. In anycase, with the new Black Templar Codex on the way, I decided to dust off my old codexes to do some research on their characters. There’s really only 3 of them – which is what makes their chapter perfect for a game of Kiss, Marry, Kill. But this is the Grimdark. So we’re making the game into “Primaris’d, Keep, Kill” to make it more thematically appropriate.

The thing is we already know that GW has Primaris’d one of the big three – so it really comes down to Keep or Kill for the last two. But perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s meet the “lucky” batch of characters.

Emperor’s Champion – Primaris’d

This one is easy. It’s the Emperor’s Champion. You’ve seen the model by now and if not, well, there ya go! Clearly GW opted to give the Emperor’s Champ the ol’Primaris Treatment. And he’s back and bigger than before. It kind of makes sense that the EC would get Primaris’d too – it’s really more of a title that a Battle Brother gets before the battle and less of a permanent position. He’s almost faceless in that regard.

With the Primaris candidate out of the way that just leaves Keep or Kill. So who else is left?

High Marshal Helbrecht

He’s been leading the Black Templars on their endless crusade for a bit. He’s got a finecast model currently and he’s been around the block for a while already. Stoic-looking and determined he’s one of two characters we have to choose from. The other…

Chaplain Grimaldus

Grimaldus runs with a crew – as you can see. He’s the faith-spewing Chaplain who’s always up for a good fight. Plus, he’s got his own book. He’s an inspirational figure to be sure. His model is also a bit dated and those servitors are looking pretty ragged these days.

So now the question becomes which one would you Keep and which do would you Kill?

This is a tough one! Both have some things going for them and some things going against them. For example, both models could use a redo – but we’re pretending this is the Thunderdome so one of them has to go. I like that Grimaldus has his own book and that’s a major boon for him. However, I’m also liking the idea that the High Marshal’s story isn’t “written” yet. What to do…

Wait. I got it! Keep Grimaldus. He’s got a retinue and that’s just a lot of extra work to redo anyhow. Kill High Marshal Helbrecht. Why? Because he can be one of the only characters who dies during the Primaris Protocol Procedure! Then, he gets replaced with a new High Marshal who is a Primaris Marine! That way we get a new model, too. Boom problem solved.

Will it work out that way? Who knows! We’ll have to wait to see who else is getting updated in the new Black Templar book.
