Warhammer 40K: This Week’s Meta Hotness – Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies
This is one of Warhammer 40,000’s top units, that’s been driving around the tabletop lately. Let’s take a look at Ork Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies.
In the ever-shifting meta of 40K, armies rise and fall. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about armies that are hot or not, but a lot less time looking at units that are running the show. Today let’s take a look at one of the hottest units currently running around the tabletop.
The Unit
Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies are an Ork light vehicle/buggy unit. These Speed Freaks zip around the table covered in weapons and crew. The Squigbuggies, as the name suggests, are experts in weaponizing the deadly, but also fashionable, squigs. They provide some deadly mid-range indirect firepower.
Why They Are Good
Light vehicles are having a bit of a moment right now in 40K. As one itself, the Rukkatrukk has been able to capitalize on this. With T6 and 9 wounds the Rukkatrukk is a light, but very annoying vehicle, that can rush around causing a lot of problems. Ramshackle adds to this, giving it an annoying amount of survivability and making it very resistant to mid-range anti-tank firepower. You need to dedicate real shooting to kill this thing off, and it’s not worth all that much.
On top of being annoying, the Rukkatrukk puts out a lot of firepower, with just a ton of shots. While some of its shots are pretty unimportant the Squig and Heavy Squig Launchers are excellent anti-MEQ weapons. With S5 Ap -2 and D (and the option of getting extra AP at times) they are a perfect weapon for dealing with MEQ and lighter infantry. D2 also allows it to double as an anti-light vehicle weapon AND helps it get past some defensive rules that make D1 weapons worse.
The unit gets enough shots to help make up for the low BS. It’s also one of the few Buggy-types to get Grot Gunners on its primary weapon, giving the best gun it’s got BS 4. On top of that, the two main guns don’t need LoS. This thing can drop 3d6 D2 shots pretty much anywhere on the table, you just can’t hide from it. Blast helps it out even more, letting it really put the hurt of the enemy. In combat, should you need to get there, its saw blades are also D2. Overall this super cheap unit can put out some ranged hurt and is super annoying to get rid of.

Saying a unit is hot is all well and good, but let’s take a look at how players are using it. One list that highlights Rukkatrukk Squigbuggies is the list that Rich Kilton ran to take 1st place at the recent Wargames for Warriors . (via 40kstats.com)

Using the Unit
Rich’s list makes use of 3 Squigbuggies, less than some others that have popped up. The list runs the Squigbuggies as single units making them very annoying to kill. Taking them as Deathskulls also lets them get some extra re-rolls, which is pretty nice. The army is, as expected of Orks, a fast aggressive army. It’s got a ton of units and a lot of annoying ones, from the Squigbuggies, to a bunch of small squig-mounted units. There aren’t really any crazy combos with the Squigbuggies, though they do fit the theme, but they are a useful part of the army. They provide the bulk of the armies anti- MEQ ranged firepower and fit in well overall.
