Warhammer 40K: Two New Codexes For December – It’s Prediction Time!
Who’s going to get a new codex in December? We don’t know but we have a few guesses we’d like to throw out there!
In case you missed the news, GW shared a new roadmap for Warhammer 40,000 codex releases. This was good because it confirmed that after Grey Knights and Thousand Sons we’re getting Orks and Black Templar.
But the next big news was who’s coming in December. What we DO know for sure is this:
“And in December, we’ll see brand new codexes for xenos and Imperial armies”
That’s confirming we’re getting an Imperium book and a Xenos book – sorry Chaos, you’re going to have to wait until 2022 (but you literally just got Thousand Sons so we don’t feel too bad).
So which armies does that leave available?
Imperium
- Adeptus Custodes
- Imperial Knights
- Astra Militarum
- Inquisition
- Assassins
- Sisters of Silence
Xenos
- Craftworld Aeldari
- Genestealer Cult
- Harlequins
- T’au Empire
- Tyranids
- Ynnari
It’s a pretty even spread. But in reality, for the Imperium The Adeptus Custodes would probably include Sister of Silence as the “Talons of the Emperor” again. And an Inquisition book would probably have Assassins as well. At the same time, all of those forces could be combined in to a single book, too. Realistically, I doubt it’s going to be an Inquisition codex ahead of Astra Militarum, Imperial Knights and the Custodes. And that’s actually our guesses in for the books coming in December.
A new Astra Militarum Book would have the broadest appeal. Plus those new Krieg models from Kill Team are just begging for a release as a stand alone product, too. If GW wanted to just crank out a Codex, they could also update Imperial Knights pretty quick. And finally, Adeptus Custodes could use a book the least of the three in my opinion. Unless GW is planning on releasing some new units with that book – which I’m actually all in favor for. They need some more options as is and that could warrant a new book.
On the Xenos side of the coin – where to start. The Ynnari have pretty much fallen off the radar and Harlequins always felt like a fairly shallow book. The Craftworld Aeldari could certainly use some new models and a new codex is a great time to release those. Of the three, I think I’d personally rather see a combined book or at least a Craftworld update of some kind first. But I actually don’t think the Aeldari are going to be the Xenos option.
Codex: ‘send in the drones’ could use some help. The T’au have always packed on the firepower but with some many updates to the lethality to other armies, they seem a bit dated currently. I’d personally like to see them get a boost to their Firewarriors. Make the T’au have a reason to take them over drones. While I do think the T’au are a good option for a new codex, I still don’t think they will be the book.
Based on the art work that GW is teasing and also because it’s been a long time coming I’m really hoping for a new Tyranid book. A further second would be a Genestealer Cult option – but man, they could use some help. Tyranid players have been waiting for something new and exciting to come for a long time. We’ve been wondering if we’d ever get a Lord of War. Tyranids could also use *anything* to help make them compete with the sheer overwhelming firepower and lethality in 9th edition. This codex is really showing its age and while you can still pull out a win, it’s far from easy. The current book is simply outclassed by most of the new stuff – and by a wide margin.
So, if you haven’t figured it out by now we’re hoping for an Astra Militarum book and a Tyranid Book in December. Those are our predictions – now it’s your turn! Who do you think will be getting a book? It’s one Imperial and one Xenos option…so place your bets!
Come On Tyranid Lord of War…
